Mission Statement

The purpose of the Sons of the American Revolution is "to perpetuate the memory of those who, by their services or sacrifices during the war of the American Revolution, achieved the independence of the American People".

Eligibillity

Any man of age eighteen (18) years or over, who is a lineal descendant of an ancestor who supported the war for American independence is eligible for membership in the Sons of the American Revolution. These ancestors are referred to as Revolutionary War Patriots and include those persons who fought in the military and/or militia, who provided supplies to the American cause, who served on political bodies supporting the Revolution, who signed oaths of support and similar acts.

The National Society SAR establishes all criteria for membership. However, members do not join the NSSAR directly. Instead, all membership begins at the local level (WRSSAR). The local chapters carry out the programs of the SAR directly in each community across the United States. The local chapters can help prospective new members to prepare their applications. All fees are paid directly to the local chapter which will ensure that the State and National Societies receive their fees.

If you are interested in becoming a member of the SAR, your first step should be to visit the NSSAR's website to review all of their information about membership. Click Here to be taken to the NSSAR national website .

The WRSSAR has members who can answer your questions and assist you with the genealogical process. However, we can only help to guide you. We do not have paid staff who can do the research or the work for you. But, we can certainly be of immense help in guiding you and looking over your application to improve its chance of approval. Please contact us here for questions and help with your application: wrssar.communications@gmail.com.

The WRSSAR offers several types of membership once you are approved by the NSSAR. The fees listed below include ALL current local, state and national dues for the 2017 year. There is always a chance that some of these fees may change so contact the WRSSAR directly for the most accurate information:

BEST VALUE: Under the WRSSAR Life Membership Program the current rules of the NSSAR, members must pay local, state and national membership fees to remain active. There is no option to join only the national SAR. After 50 years of membership, the SAR awards you Emeritus status and your dues are waived going forward.

However, the WRSSAR offers a unique Life Membership opportunity. Upon joining and paying the WRSSAR life membership fee in full, the WRSSAR will guarantee to pay all local, state and national dues until you reach Emeritus status. There is no doubt that all fees will eventually go up. However, once you are a member of our Life Membership Program, we will cover those fees no matter what they are until you reach Emeritus status. The current buy-in level is $1000 - paid in full. Please be aware that this program is offered locally. If you move, we will continue to pay your wrssar, ohssar and nssar renewal fees. However, you may not transfer the unused funds to another society. If you wish to be active in your new area, you may need to pay their dual or joint membership fee. However, the WRSSAR will continue to pay your ohssar/nssar dues regardless of where you live.
